Drawing on psychological theories including social exclusion, discrimination, and identity conflict, the current research investigates the effects of gender annihilation from a potential group, Digital Heroes. When watching a video for Digital Heroes featuring all men, women who self-categorized as Digital Heroes provided fewer thoughts, demonstrating less cognitive effort, whereas women who did not categorize as Digital Heroes reported more positive thoughts, less negative mood, and better self-concepts. Implications for media effects research and career-based interventions are discussed.
